Medical marijuana is not currently legal in the State of Wisconsin, but we have high hopes that it will be soon. The state does have low-THC cannabis oil, or CBD oil, but many people hope the program will expand to allow other types of cannabis for deserving patients.
There has, however, been some recent good news marking progress for Wisconsin’s medical marijuana program! Some republicans in the Senate are finally considering legalizing medical marijuana.
The Senate GOP Leader, Devin LeMahieu believes there is potential of more votes for medical marijuana this upcoming session if it is regulated well. This is the first time LeMahieu has considered any type of legalization legislation for medical cannabis.
A poll taken last year showed that 64% of state voters support legalization of cannabis. Eventually, lawmakers will have to make some progress on this issue if they hope to stay in their positions.
Governor Tony Evers has supported medical marijuana since he began his term in office. He says that he will sign a bill on medical marijuana as long as it is not “overly restrictive.” He added that he is confident that lawmakers in the legislature will bring him a bipartisan bill for him to sign.
Lawmakers have also stated that the legalization of marijuana for recreational use will likely happen at some point, but the most important thing right now is focusing on a medical program and the decriminalization of cannabis first.
